First Nanogel® project in the UK
The first Kalwall® + Nanogel® project in the UK has been built in Hemsworth, an old mining-town in Yorkshire. The Wakefield local authorities commissioned Atkins architects to design serviced offices using the very latest thinking and technology in sustainable energy building.
The Kalwall cladding system was chosen because of its unique ability to distribute evenly diffused daylight into the offices, without shadows, glare and hotspots and without the need for curtains or blinds. The performance of the cladding system was dramatically enhanced by incorporating Nanogel, the silica aerogel manufactured the Cabot Corporation. Nanogel is the world’s lightest and best insulating solid material. By using it within the Kalwall panels a U value of 0.28 (W/m2.K) was achieved. Externally, the cladding presents the appearance of clean and unfettered full height walls.
Kalwall + Nanogel provides designers with the technology to have translucent facades or roofs as energy efficient as a solid wall and to introduce daylight through surfaces which would normally be opaque. These performance benefits have important implications for Part L.
Kalwall is supplied and fixed by sole UK distributor Stoakes Systems Ltd. Since its introduction from the States, Kalwall has been specified for over 200 major projects, ranging from schools and sports halls to public and industrial buildings. Many recent projects, including comments from users, are described in Schools and Kalwall. This new publication, together with technical information about Kalwall for cladding and roofing, is available from Stoakes Systems Ltd (tel +44 208 660 7667) or visit www.stoakes.co.uk.

About Kalwall
Since 1955, Kalwall has been acclaimed for its innovation and continued research into daylighting the development of translucent building technologies. No other manufacturer in the world has dedicated its entire existence of nearly half a century to the art and science of designing with daylight. The continuous evolution of the Kalwall translucent sandwich building panel technology, invented by company founder Robert Keller, has made it possible for architects and building designers to fully exercise their imaginations to incorporate daylight into their designs.

About Nanogel
Cabot Corporation created Nanogel, in part to insulate thermally inefficient glazing systems. The feather-light aerogel is based on Cabot's patented surface modification and fine-particle manufacturing technology. The nanoporous particles have an air content of 97% and weigh only 80g per litre, making Nanogel the lightest solid material in the world. It provides a superior combination of thermal and sound insulation as well as light transmission and diffusion over other insulation materials. These benefits offer new design solutions for architects where both maximum natural daylight levels and energy efficiency are required. Nanogel is manufactured exclusively by Cabot in Frankfurt, Germany.
