DSM’s award winning Stanyl TC improves heat management for LED retrofit lamps
Royal DSM, the global Life Sciences and Materials Sciences company, is profiling its multi-award winning Stanyl® TC for LED retrofit lamps at Chinaplas 2014. This thermal conductive high performance polyamide provides LED retrofit lamp manufacturers with an engineering plastics solution that delivers enhanced design flexibility and reduces the total system costs up to 40%. Stanyl TC offers superior thermal management properties and a lighter weight compared to metals
The significant benefits of LED Lighting - energy savings, longer life, higher efficiency and reduced environmental impact - as well as new legislation are encouraging consumers to replace conventional lamps with high-power LEDs. A key challenge with LEDs is the thermal management to dissipate the heat generated by the LED which directly impacts their efficiency and lifespan. Designers and manufacturers are looking for alternative materials to metals that can provide greater design freedom and lighter weight.
Stanyl TC was listed in the top-3 “Best Thermo Conductive Materials of 2013” in “The Best LED Companies of 2013” campaign sponsored by GG-LED. “Best LED Companies of 2013” was organized by GG-LED, an authoritative industrial research and media agency in the LED industry, and was an authoritative annual election in the LED industry to recognize those products and corporate brands with high industrial reputation.
DSM’s Stanyl TC meets the specific requirements of LED retrofit lamps and is a proven alternative to aluminum. Stanyl TC meets the required thermal conductivity to successfully dissipate the heat generated by the LED. The material complies with flammability requirements according to IEC and UL safety standards. Stanyl TC thermal conductive plastics provide exceptional mechanical performance under cyclic thermal loads experienced in use. It also enhances design flexibility and weight reduction, combined with exceptional durability, compared with metal.
Another benefit compared with aluminum is the significantly reduced carbon footprint. For example, heat sinks for retrofit lamps made from Stanyl TC have an 85% lower footprint compared to heat sinks made from aluminum.
DSM is fully committed to developing and investing in its range of material solutions for the lighting industry, and further upgrades and developments are planned for the near future.
