PPG to launch 50th anniversary celebration of SOLARBAN glass
Kickoff at AIA National Conference and Expo to include new SOLARBAN z75 glass
PITTSBURGH, May 20, 2014 – PPG Industries (NYSE: PPG) will celebrate the 50th anniversary of SOLARBAN® glass while highlighting new Solarban z75 glass at the 2014 American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Convention and Expo in Chicago, June 26-28. -
Since Solarban glass was launched in 1964 as one of the first coated glasses to reflect heat away from buildings and reduce air-conditioning use, the brand name has come to signify industry leadership in environmentally-advanced architectural glass. Today, the Solarban brand encompasses a broad collection of high-performance solar control, low-emissivity (low-e) glasses – including advanced products formulated with PPG’s proprietary triple-silver-coating technology – that is continually expanded and refined to meet the aesthetic and performance demands of architects and building owners.
PPG will feature a retrospective of architecturally-significant buildings constructed with Solarban glass, including the first installation on the Mutual of Omaha Regional Office Building in Miami. Now known as Colonnade Plaza, the eight-story building designed by Twin Towers architect Minoru Yamasaki features 9-foot-tall floor-to-ceiling windows. Advances in coating technology associated with the Solarban brand from 1964 through today also will be highlighted.
Solarban z75 glass, the newest addition to the product line, will be on display for the first time. With a neutral cool-gray tint and low reflectivity, Solarban z75 glass looks similar to Solarban z50 glass but is equipped with better solar control performance, giving architects another choice for neutral cool-gray glass that is optimized for their local climate and building codes.
PPG also will highlight Solarban 67 glass, which debuted at the AIA show last year. Formulated with a soft, neutral blue-gray coating, Solarban 67 glass gives buildings a brilliantly clear appearance along with excellent solar-control performance and low interior and exterior reflectivity.
Architects who visit the PPG booth also can sample two online education and specification tools. The PPG Glass Education Center hosts a mix of instructional videos, slideshows, infographics and other resources that help building professionals and students learn more about designing, specifying and building with glass. PPG Glass eView is a Web-based program that enables architects to build virtual double-glazed or triple-glazed insulating glass units (IGUs), then to view them in three dimensions to see their color, thickness, light transmittance, interior reflectivity and exterior reflectivity.
