Special Resin Colors and Effects from SABIC Innovative Plastics Help European Automakers Add Depth and Drama to Interiors

BERGEN OP ZOOM, The Netherlands – April 10, 2008 – As European automakers seek to enhance the perception of space, style, and value in smaller cars and add luxury to high-end vehicles, they are turning to SABIC Innovative Plastics’ special resin colors and effects. Among the latest trends is the use of translucent and transparent resins paired with underlying textures and patterns to create eye candy from ordinary interior components such as steering wheels, door trim, and consoles. Working side by side with customers, SABIC Innovative Plastic has developed a huge portfolio of Visualfx* resins that add unique colors and effects to the designer’s toolkit. In addition, the plastics leader is providing transparent and translucent resins for special processes such as two-shot molding and hydrographics.

“We are global pioneers in color and effects technologies that contribute both glamour and practicality to auto interiors,” said Yvette Bogaert, leader Aesthetic Products & Services, SABIC Innovative Plastics. “The use of translucent and transparent effects adds depth and a feeling of spaciousness, as well as exciting new looks for a wide range of components. At the same time, combining an opaque plastic layer with an overlayer of transparent Lexan* resin can hide wiring and other hardware. We believe the stunning aesthetics and versatility of our Visualfx resins make them the best choice for today’s new auto styling.”

Leveraging Specialized Technologies for Special Effects

Two-shot molding and hydrographics are two important technologies auto designers are leveraging for these new translucent and transparent effects. Two-shot molding involves layering translucent or transparent resin on top of a transparent, translucent, or opaque resin. The top layer gives the part added depth. Hydrographics technology calls for immersing a part in an ink pattern floating on water like a film. The pattern adheres to the part, adding design interest. Also, the pattern can wrap around the part to provide better coverage than with traditional in-mold decoration applications. A clear coat is utilized after the hydrographics process to protect the film. The coating can change the appearance of the application if a matte or soft touch surface finish is used instead of high gloss.

When OPEL designed the 2007 Corsa, the company sought to create a stylish, yet warm and inviting, interior. Working closely with SABIC Innovative Plastics, OPEL selected Lexan FXD123 resin from the company’s Visualfx resins for translucent switches and knobs on the center stack area and door interiors that would glow in night optical conditions. The plastics supplier not only created the precise daylight color OPEL sought, but also fine-tuned the amount of translucence to ensure the same tone at night, when the parts are lit from behind.

Launching a New Colour Palette

SABIC Innovative Plastics will soon introduce the Expression 2009 palette of colours – featuring a brand-new category of special effects – that reflect upcoming trends. The Expression 2009 portfolio – available in a range of Visualfx resins – can help auto designers explore new aesthetic possibilities for future vehicles.
