Trespa Athlon for Swimming Pool Bornheim

Trespa Athlon was selected for the recently completed renovation and expansion of the municipal Swimming Pool in Bornheim, Germany. Originally built in 1975, the swimming complex required a complete renovation - whilst at the same time new facilities were built for babies and small children. Besides functionality and quality, key emphasis was placed on aesthetics so as to significantly improve user comfort.

Architects Heuer Faust were appointed by the City of Bornheim for the design and the development. One key aspect of the extensive programme was the renovation of the changing facilities. The original changing rooms and 560 waterproof double-Z lockers had been made from HPL Compact panels because in the words of the then Council Leader: "It is simply too expensive to build cheaply and then have to face continuous high maintenance costs."

Now, nearly 30 years later, the same long-term view was maintained for the renovation programme: the City of Bornheim chose Trespa Athlon panels for both the changing rooms and the separation walls in the sanitary block.

Architects Gundolf Wermelskirchen and Dominik Breuckmann from Architects Heuer Faust explained that one key reason for choosing Trespa Athlon was its many design possibilities: "Trespa Athlon is ideal for use in combination with other materials such as steel, glass or wood and therefore allows us to create highly individual designs. Moreover, Athlon could easily be incorporated in the total colour scheme of the renovated swimming facilities. We used the warm colours to provide a contrast with the cool tiles and the light coloured wood. Besides, we wanted to make sure that the swimming pool's changing facilities not just meet today's expectations, but also those of tomorrow. It is important to note that if there are any future expansions - or panels get damaged in some way - they can easily be replaced or relocated."

The architects chose a range of unicolours from the collection "Flash", with a range of blue, green, yellow and red shades in various intensities, to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
