Shanghai, June 4, 2019–Clariant joined the recent “Hackathon” with 14 other leading international chemical companies in China, providing dedicated contributions to future talent development at the Second Young Talents’ Chemical Innovation Challenge (Hackathon 2019 ) held on May 31 – June 1, 2019 in Shanghai, China. Mentored by Clariant, the Dalian University of Technology “Plastic Big Bang” team won second place at the finals, with their “Plastic Terminal Intelligent Recycling Box” project.
The event was organized by the China Petroleum & Chemical Industry Federation (CPCIF) under the theme “New Plastic Economy,” with student participants exploring the three innovation dimensions of product, process and paradigm in an attempt to trigger new insights and dedicated solutions for societal issues such as “plastic pollution” and “ocean plastic pollution.” The Chairman of CPCIF Li Shousheng, Vice Chairman Fu Xiangsheng and Party Committee Member/Deputy Secretary-general Pang Guanglian, Education and Training Division Chief/Chemical Talents and Labor Service Center Director Ye Hao all attended the competition and shared experience with students in Shanghai.
As the only Hackathon of Chinese Chemical industry, the “Hackathon” 2019 attracted keen participants from 22 universities in China that sent 40 teams to the competition this year, following a successful inauguration event last year. After several elimination rounds, 15 teams were shortlisted for the final round. Clariant was honored to be assigned as mentor for the Dalian University of Technology team, as well as on the judging panel for the finals.
“Through participation in the ‘Hackathon’ 2019 and guidance to university students, Clariant leveraged our corporate spirit and industry- leading expertise to help participants spark new insights and perspectives as they worked to solve some of the most pressing environmental issues faced by our society today, which further underlines our role as a key advocate of sustainability and innovation in the chemical industry, ” said Fu Cai Wang, Clariant’s China President.
Students from the Dalian University of Technology taking part in “Hackathon” 2019 benefited from online consultation with their Clariant mentors, who presented useful guidance on innovative design and profit models, as well as expert opinions on additives used in plastics. In addition to supporting the “Hackathon” event in China, Clariant is also one of the most proactive participants in the CPCIF community and has been actively pursuing its sustainability mission. For instance, last year the CPCIF-Clariant CleanTech Award was inaugurated in China to recognize the contribution to sustainable chemical industry made by young research talents in China.
