DSM Stanyl ForTii T11 selected by WanJie Electronic for high performance halogen-free terminal blocks
Royal DSM, the global Life Sciences and Materials Sciences company, announced that its Stanyl® ForTii™ T11 is selected by WanJie Electronic for use in SMT-soldered terminal blocks. Stanyl ForTii T11 is an innovative high temperature polyamide 4T grade that delivers UL94-V0 flame retardancy combined with outstanding thermal and mechanical performance. This halogen-free material is designed to meet the stringent regulations and high performance requirements of the high-end terminal block market.
Terminal blocks connect printed circuit boards (PCBs) to external devices. They are commonly used in industrial machinery, automation, transportation, building infrastructure and electronic devices.
Conventional wave soldering of terminal blocks onto PCBs is being steadily replaced by surface mount technology (SMT) or by through-hole reflow soldering (SMT THR). These new processes are more cost efficient, more environmentally friendly, and much more reliable – reject rates with SMT THR are less than a tenth when compared to wave or hand soldering. Many defects today are the result of a weak or cold soldering joint after assembly.
Stanyl ForTii T11 has been approved by Wanjii Electronic, a Chinese company specialized in the production of terminal blocks. Chen Jianwan, General Manager of Wanjie said: “The new terminal block represents the perfect combination of this new high temperature resistant material with highly sophisticated connection technology and it meets our demands of SMT reflow soldered products.”
Until now, the traditional SMT-soldered terminal block market in China has been served mainly by LCP (Liquid Crystalline Polymer). However, LCP limits the flexibility of terminal block design. Thanks to the high CTI (comparative tracking Index) of Stanyl ForTii T11, terminal block designers enjoy more flexibility of design. In addition, Stanyl ForTii T11 is superior to LCP in strength, allowing for thin-walled parts production and corresponding cost savings. Furthermore, it has excellent color performance, and is available in five colors: grey, black, white, orange and green.
The biggest advantage of Stanyl ForTii T11 is its performance during SMT THR soldering, SMT THR Stanyl ForTii T11 was developed to meet the top moisture sensitivity level, MSL2, according to IPC/JEDEC J-STD 020D, which classifies materials according to their moisture sensitivity. The less moisture the material absorbs, the lower its tendency to blister during soldering.
John Hsieh, DSM International Segment Manager Connectors–, said: “Compared with LCP, Stanyl ForTii T11 has better electrical performance, especially in smaller designs with high electrical loads.” The material has been certified by the VDE (Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies).
John Hsieh added: “Stanyl ForTii T11 helps our customers meet the new trend in China towards SMT reflow soldered products. Our material enables higher design flexibility, with great electrical and mechanical performance while simultaneously meeting all the key specifications for terminal blocks in a way that is much more cost-effective.”
Stanyl ForTii T11 complies with directives governing restriction of hazardous substances (RoHS) and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), and results in components with significantly lower carbon footprints than versions made in rival materials such as liquid crystal plastics (LCPs) and polyphthalamides (PPAs).
