PPG completes COLORFUL COMMUNITIES project in Changning District of Shanghai with unveiling of huge mural

SHANGHAI, Jan. 10, 2020 – PPG (NYSE:PPG) today announced the completion of a COLORFUL COMMUNITIES® project in the Changning District of Shanghai with an unveiling ceremony celebrating a huge mural. Named “Flowers & Doves,” the mural was painted on the exterior walls of two six-story residential buildings in the Changning District.

From initial design to final selection and from construction to onsite creation, the project lasted more than 180 days and brought together 14 artists, 18 workers and more than 20 volunteers from PPG, the local community and government representatives, who together spent more than 1,000 hours repairing and beautifying the exterior walls of the residential buildings.

PPG provided 275 gallons (1,100 liters) of Masters’ MarkTM exterior paints and service to assist this project. The Colorful Communities program provides PPG volunteers and products along with financial contributions to bring color and vitality to communities where the company operates around the world, such as Shanghai’s Changning District, where PPG’s China headquarters is located. In addition, also located in Shanghai are PPG’s Architectural Coatings production plant in the Songjiang District and Industrial Coatings production plant in the Jiading District.

As the “West Gate” of downtown Shanghai, the Changning District plays an important role as Shanghai’s window to the outside world. The mural sits at the intersection of Tianshan Road and Loushanguan Road in Changning District, which is located in an important commercial area.

This Colorful Communities project is part of the city’s planning efforts in the Changning District, which received great support from Hongqiao and Zhongshan Park Area Office and Tianshan Street Office of Changning District and participation from the relevant communities and residents in the neighborhood.

"This mural realizes the fusion of the surrounding residential space, business architecture and public transportation, and it brings the joy to the public,” said Xu Jing, Deputy District Chief of Changning District. “This is our spiritual wealth. It is also a part of our responsibility to build community with Shanghai neighbors in this way. At the same time, we hope to influence the whole society and add more color and beauty to this area. It is our hope to see more such art projects in the future.”

The mural, named “Flowers & Doves” as a salute to the city of Shanghai, was painted in a palette of more than 15 colors. The colors were chosen to depict the connection between Shanghai and its people and people with common objects, offering them comfort, inner peace and calmness even on their busiest days.

“With the creation of this mural, PPG makes the environment of the community more beautiful and full of artistic elegance. It is our sincere hope that people can feel happy and free whenever they look at this mural.” said Cathy Yan, PPG general manager, corporate and government affairs, Asia Pacific. “Colorful Communities is a long-term charitable project dedicated to improving the environment of neighborhoods and beautifying public spaces that reaffirms PPG’s purpose of ‘We Protect and Beautify the World.’”
