DSM ‘Bright Science’ focuses on high performance polyamide solutions at Chinaplas 2015

Range of high-end industry applications on show covering automotive, electronic, packaging and consumer goods sectors.

Royal DSM, the global Life Sciences and Material Sciences company, will highlight its continued strong commitment to the electronics, automotive, packaging and consumer goods industries at Chinaplas 2015. The company will showcase its portfolio of solutions for mobile devices and high-heat automotive applications on its stand (Hall 11.2-J41) in Guangzhou from May 20-23.

DSM continues to apply Bright Science to provide world class materials that meet the increasing high performance demands of industry today and tomorrow. DSM’s materials are being used in applications that deliver outstanding customer benefits and long-term sustainable solutions.

“Chinaplas presents an annual opportunity for us to showcase our extensive capabilities as a leading high performance materials producer. Building on our core pillars of innovation and sustainability, we are fully committed to growing and strengthening our high performance materials capability to meet the demands of the China and global markets,” explains Ivo Lansbergen, President of DSM Engineering Plastics Asia Pacific.

DSM has one of the industry’s broadest portfolio’s of high performance materials. These include Stanyl® heat-resistant PA46, Stanyl® ForTii™ high performance PA4T, EcoPaXX® 70% bio-based PA410, Akulon® PA6 and PA66, Novamid® PA6, PA66, PA6/66 copolymer, and amorphous transparent PA, Arnitel® thermoplastic copolyester, and Arnite® polyesters (PBT and PET) .

Improving reliability and safety for the next generation(s) of mobile devices

DSM, with its proven material performance for audio-jack connectors, frames and ear-phone cables, will demonstrate how it is supporting the development of thinner, faster, stronger devices in line with their core value of sustainability. A key feature will be its high performance range of polyamide engineering polymers that have been approved by global electronic producers for the next generation of USB connectors known as USB Type-C. USB Type C connectors are considerably smaller than previous generations, and the performance properties of the materials used for their housings are especially critical.

DSM’s Stanyl Polyamide 46 and Stanyl ForTii Polyamide 4T high performance polyamides provide high electrical insulation, an ideal balance of toughness and stiffness, and an extremely low UL 94 V-0 rating together with improved processing and efficiency benefits, enabling the manufacture of the safer, smaller USB Type –C connectors.

Stanyl® ForTii™ - smart material choice for latest metal frame smartphone

DSM Stanyl® ForTii™ is now being used for the antenna splitters on the latest Xiaomi Mi4 smartphone. The material was chosen for its mechanical performance, high flow characteristics, excellent color stability and superb chemical resistance.

As an exterior part, insulated plastic antenna splitters place particularly high demands on aesthetics, tenacity and processing. The material must display extremely high flow properties and the final part is subjected to high temperatures of 80℃-100℃ and cleaning processes in a strong alkaline solution during manufacturing. After processing, the part needs to be precision machined and is immersed in cutting fluids requiring strong corrosion resistance.

Also on show at the DSM stand is the Google Tango tablet where Stanyl® ForTii™ has also been selected for use in the frame design.

Low weight, high heat automotive applications with Diablo polyamide technology

Stanyl polyamide 46 and Akulon PA66, two of the key grades in DSM’s high heat portfolio, will be on show at Chinaplas 2015.

The highly aggressive and space constricted environment of the engine compartment coupled with the increasing use of turbochargers and superchargers is driving temperatures as high as 260°C. DSM’s Diablo polyamide grades help manufacturers meet this challenge by providing unprecedented heat resistance alongside weight reduction and overall performance improvement.

In 2014 DSM launched its next generation of Diablo high temperature resistant polyamides. Stanyl Diablo HDT2700 is able to withstand a continuous use temperature of 230°C, while Akulon Diablo HDT2500 is capable of withstanding a 220°C continuous-use temperature. Both grades have improved resistance to short-term high temperature peaks as measured by deflection temperature under load (HDT

Akulon XS: designed for cost effective flexible food packaging solutions

DSM’s leadership in polyamide 6 (Akulon) and thermoplastic copolyester for thin film (Arnitel) for flexible food packaging is helping customers to provide better solutions for the world’s rapidly changing food packaging needs, meeting the demand for food safety and reduced food and packaging waste. DSM recently made a breakthrough in polyamide blown film processing with Akulon XS, a PA6 material specifically designed for blown films in flexible food packaging. Akulon XS has a low crystallization rate, which gives it unique processing characteristics for improved performance and productivity gains. As well as making it easier and more cost effective for processors to make polyamide 6 blown films for flexible food packaging, the material leverages the unique barrier and mechanical properties of polyamide 6.

Akulon® TC helping to grow the LED lighting and automotive lighting industry

DSM’s Akulon® TC is shedding new light on heat conductive plastics for the fast expanding LED lighting sector. Heat conductive plastics have become the material of choice for the heat dissipation enclosure used in indoor LED lighting applications and automotive lighting applications, replacing traditional aluminum radiators. Akulon® TC is the latest material from DSM for the LED sector, replacing Stanyl™ TC, and offers manufacturers enhanced mechanical performance and long term reliability ensuring lights do not fail due to cracks, greater design flexibility, as well as improved processibility and cost efficiencies.

EcoPaXX® provides edge for new outdoor mountaineering shoe

Also on display is the new light mountaineering shoe from sports specialist Salomon with an edging chassis made from high performance EcoPaXX® from DSM. The innovative edging chassis, a special plate built into the sole with a sophisticated design, combines optimum flexibility and stiffness to make a shoe that is extremely comfortable, provides excellent grip on difficult surfaces, and allows the wearer to be quick, agile and safe. This demanded a material with the right combination of appropriate mechanical properties and toughness, and which can also be processed easily.

DSM’s unique blend of competencies in Life Sciences and Material’s Sciences comes to the fore at CHinaplas 2015 and is demonstrated through the range of innovative material solutions on show and its strengthened high performance material portfolio. The company is focused on addressing and resolving the specific challenges and demands faced by its customers across all industries and to meeting these challenges with reliable, sustainable solutions.
