DSM named Overall Winner at 2015 Singapore Sustainable Business Awards

Royal DSM, a global science-based company active in health, nutrition and materials, has been recognized as Overall Winner of the prestigious Singapore Sustainable Business Awards (SBA). DSM received the award for its commitment to sustainability and for creating value along the three dimensions of people, planet and profit throughout its supply chain. Next to being named the Overall Winner, DSM also won two further category awards in Supply Chain Management and Climate Change.

The awards were announced at a large ceremony held in Singapore on November 3rd, with more than twice the number of companies, from a wide range of industry sectors, taking part compared to last year. The awards are conducted together with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) and the winners selected by an expert advisory panel through a questionnaire and interview process. According to Global Initiatives, organizer of the SBA, the awards celebrate the achievements of companies who have paved the way for sustainable growth and may inspire other companies to follow.

Representing DSM at the awards ceremony, Roelof Westerbeek, Executive Vice President DSM, said: “We are extremely pleased and honored with these SBA awards and take great pride in being recognized for our commitment to sustainability. Sustainability has been at the heart of DSM’s strategic vision for many years now and we firmly believe that leading global companies like DSM have a large responsibility to address the challenges of climate change and to leave a more sustainable world for future generations to come. There are tremendous value creation opportunities for those companies who do this right.”

DSM’s focus on tackling climate change is based on 3 core pillars of becoming more energy efficient, enabling the low carbon economy and advocating climate change. As an example, the company is committed to reducing its own carbon footprint and has set itself an interim target to source 50% of its electricity needs from renewable energy by 2025, with a view to becoming ‘100% renewable’ in the future. Its new state-of-the-art solar technology center at DSM Engineering Plastics' plant in Pune, India demonstrates and showcases the performance of DSM's innovations in solar technology and generates 25% of the site’s electricity needs. Another 25% of the energy on this site is coming from wind-energy.

Westerbeek, who also joined a panel discussion on Carbon pricing and what this means for business at the concurrent Responsible Business Forum in Singapore (November 2-4) added: “Climate change will shape the way we do business now and in the coming decades. We view this as both a responsibility and an opportunity, and we are wholly committed to being at the forefront of driving and supporting industry’s emissions’ reductions and advocacy initiatives.”

Other winners at the SBA included Kimberly Clark for Water Management, DHL for Energy Management and Ikea Singapore for Workforce.
