Recipients visit PPG facilities for scholarship granting, open house events
PPG provides scholarships to more than 150 students at 10 universities in China
TIANJIN, China, Jan. 15, 2020 – PPG (NYSE: PPG) today announced that it granted scholarships and science and technology innovation funds to more than 150 students from 10 leading universities across China in 2019. The program is run in partnership with the nonprofit Give2Asia.
PPG established the China scholarship program in 2003 to recognize high-achieving students who are majoring in chemistry and material-related disciplines. It provides financial assistance to help students complete their education and encourages them to explore scientific research.
PPG representatives and teachers from each of the universities presented scholarships to the students during ceremonies at various PPG facilities, including Wuhan, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Zhangjiagang and Kunshan. The events also included discussions on the latest industry trends and PPG’s China operations, corporate culture, production processes, and focus on safety and environmental protection.
“Talent plays a vital role in industrial development,” said Cathy Yan, PPG general manager, corporate and government affairs, Asia Pacific. “The scholarship program is our signature initiative to support education in China. Through interaction, we hope to provide students with a deeper understanding of the industry and help them map out the right paths for their future studies and careers.”
“I feel lucky to receive the award from PPG,” said Zhang Ruyuan, a scholarship recipient from Nankai University. “The visit to the PPG facility enabled me to have a better understanding of the value of chemistry in the production process. It showed me career options that might be a good fit, and it was a reminder to work hard to give back to the community.”
The 10 leading Chinese universities involved with the PPG scholarship program in 2019 were Beijing University of Chemical Technology, East China University of Science and Technology, Jilin University, Nanjing Tech University, Nanjing University, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nankai University, South China University of Technology, Tianjin University and Wuhan University of Technology.
