DSM demonstrates its commitment to low weight, high heat automotive applications with Diablo technology at Chinaplas

Royal DSM, the global Life Sciences and Materials Sciences company, is an expert in the use of high heat materials for automotive engine compartment applications, where temperatures can reach as high as 260°C. Stanyl® polyamide 46 and Akulon® PA66, two of the key grades in DSM’s high heat portfolio, will be on show at Chinaplas 2015

The engine compartment is an aggressive environment where space is at a premium. The increasing use of turbochargers and superchargers, as well as improved pedestrian protection systems is driving temperatures as high as 260°C. At the same time, the automotive industry is constantly searching for solutions to reduce weight and improve performance. DSM’s Diablo polyamide grades help manufacturers meet this challenge by providing unprecedented heat resistance.

Recently Hutchinson selected the material for its resonator used on the compressor outlet side of the General Motors car platform D2XX in Europe and in North America. GM does not yet use plastic for this application for its cars in China but will soon be replacing metal with Stanyl Diablo PA46. Stanyl Diablo PA46 offers excellent mechanical and burst performances even under the super high temperature of generated in the turbo compressor outlet, meeting automotive manufaturers’ extreme demands for the resonator application.

In 2014 DSM launched its next generation of Diablo high temperature resistant polyamides. Stanyl Diablo HDT2700 is able to withstand a continuous use temperature of 230°C, while Akulon Diablo HDT2500 is capable of withstanding a 220°C continuous-use temperature. Both grades have improved resistance to short-term high temperature peaks as measured by deflection temperature under load (HDT). Stanyl Diablo has an improved HDT of 267°C, while Akulon Diablo has an HDT of 245°C. The long-term heat ageing and the HDT of the materials are proof of their superior characteristics compared to competing materials currently on the market.

A key feature of these grades is their improved resistance to chemicals and gases in EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) systems. They have excellent processing properties, can be easily welded and create finished parts with high burst pressure weld-line strength as well as excellent surface finish.

DSM is a leader in the development of high temperature resistant thermoplastics for automotive engines. Diablo technology, developed and patented by DSM, improves the long-term temperature resistance of materials and has been applied to various types of polyamide. As well as using this technology for the in-house production of Stanyl and Akulon, DSM also licenses it to other material suppliers.

DSM, in its commitment to people and the planet through Bright Science. Brighter Living.™ is dedicated to improving the sustainability of the automotive and transportation sector through metal replacement and weight reduction that contribute to lower CO2 emissions.
