DSM Opens China Science and Technology Center in Shanghai

On Oct 17th 2011, Royal DSM N.V., the Life Sciences and Materials Sciences Company, today opens its China Science and Technology Center in its Shanghai Campus. With the completion of new lab spaces in the second R&D building, DSM China announced the opening of its Biotechnology Center for life sciences.

“Seeing technical enzymes as the future opportunity, we aimed it with progressive actions.” said Dr. Eric Roos, Vice President R&D DSM Food Specialties and Director of newly founded DSM Biotechnology Centre (DBC). “Shanghai campus is the best location for us to execute as One-DSM. We are close to our local customers and partners, production sites, R&D crew, commercial team, as well as local scientist communities. It fits perfectly with the combination of innovation and high growth economies, the two key growth drivers of the corporate strategy ‘DSM in Motion: Driving Focused Growth’. ”

Innovation within DSM

DSM Biotechnology Center has 3 permanent lab spaces: Microbiology and lab scale Fermentation, Downstream Processing, and Applied Biochemistry. The centre also designed with Biotech kitchen, media preparation, inoculums' preparation, autoclave unit, raw material storage, data monitoring, cleaning, waste disposal.

The Biotechnology Centre is dedicated to life sciences, with a strong emphasis on biotechnological research and development within DSM. Apart from its major role in steering the biotechnology competences, this center is responsible for the realization of biotechnological innovations, the development of new products and cost effective production processes for various business units within DSM.

“I am very confident that the new biotechnology center will improve our competitive edge with innovative products, enhance production capacity of existing facilities in China, and develop more tailor-made solutions together with our local customers.” commented by Regional President Asia, DSM Food Specialties and Director of Hydrocolloids, Ms. Xiangwei Gong.

Open Innovation Outreach

With a strong belief in open innovation, DSM is active in establishing partnerships in innovation in China and its partners range from research institutions to innovative companies.

Earlier in Aug, DSM Food Specialties concluded an Agreement of Research Cooperation on an innovative project with East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), one of the top universities in the field of industrial microbial fermentation in China. The agreement aims at stimulating future research exchanges between both sides, and executing the cooperation mainly on applying CFD theory in the industrial scale-up process. It is expected that joint efforts in bioprocess improvement from both partners, integrating best practices, will result in new insights and better ways to design and operate industrial fermentations, fulfilling economic as well as sustainability needs.

With its main location in Delft as an extensive know-how and knowledge pool, DSM Biotechnology Centre is actively developing in China and US together with its global network at various sites of DSM as well as with academia.
