GLS CORP. OFFERS THREE NEW CUTTING-EDGE TPE TECHNOLOGY PLATFORMS TO THE ASIA PACIFIC MARKET
Vibration/Sound Dampening, Barrier TPEs & ABS Overmolding Showcase GLS’ Leadership in Bringing Newest TPE Innovations to China, Global Markets
GUANGZHOU, CHINA – May 21, 2007 – To proactivly meet customer needs for thermoplastic materials with increasingly sophisticated performance properties, GLS Corp., a global leader in the development, manufacture, and supply of high-performance, custom-formulated thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), today announced three new TPE technologies for specialty applications worldwide.
GLS Corp. will offer the Asia region a range of new customized TPEs that provide:
Vibration- and sound-dampening properties for applications such as power tools and electronics to minimize motor noise, vibration transmission, or shock when dropped;
Barrier properties for protection against oxygen and moisture transmission in food/beverage, medical applications, and consumer applications to increase shelf life in products where evaporation or oxygen permeation causes failures; and
New offerings for overmolding onto acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resin and other substrates for improved ergonomics, grip, and aesthetics in a wide range of applications.
These new high-performance technologies further complement the expanding world-class TPE portfolio offered by GLS Corp. and its new Suzhou, China, manufacturing plant, which is less than a year old. GLS is introducing the new technology platforms here at Chinaplas 2007.
“As a global leader in TPE technologies, GLS makes it a top priority to develop new and unique materials solutions to proactively meet customers’ changing application needs,” said Walter Ripple, director of sales and marketing for GLS Corp. “Our Suzhou plant, like all our facilities worldwide, has been designed to produce the latest TPE innovations with consistently high quality, and will be utilized to supply customers globally. As we continue to increase production capacity at Suzhou, we are also expanding our offerings with key TPE technologies that help customers gain a competitive advantage.”
Dampening Technology
GLS recently formulated a new technology suite of specialty vibration- and sound-dampening TPE alloys which enable manufacturers to mitigate the negative effects of noise and vibration from products such as hardware and garden tools, footwear, hand-held electronics, hard disc drives, speaker surrounds, and building materials. GLS dampening technology, which utilizes mechanical principles for sound deadening across a wide frequency range (20 Hz to 20,000 Hz), offers a more versatile and lighter-weight/lower-density replacement for engineering plastics. Customers can specify grades for overmolding onto a variety of substrates, choose from a range of hardnesses or custom colors, and UV protection. These products can also meet UL specifications.
Barrier Technology
Although not inherent in most TPEs, barrier properties are highly desirable to prolong shelf life in food and beverage packaging, and to protect the integrity of medical supplies and drugs. GLS has developed special barrier technology that sharply reduces oxygen permeation and moisture vapor transmission, providing an excellent alternative to separate barrier layers, secondary operations, and separate processing of thermoset rubber. The new technology offers customers many options, including a range of hardnesses, translucence, colorability, and different processing methods.
ABS Overmolding Technology
ABS is one of the most popular engineered materials used in the manufacture of everything from toys to high-end computer and mobile consumer electronics. As a major manufacturing center for these markets, Asia has a strong and growing need for diversified products that provides a soft-touch over-mold feel to appeal to a variety of consumer tastes.
Overmolding a plastic part with a TPE is a design technology that cannot be done using conventional elastomers. GLS is augmenting its TPE portfolio that enables overmolding onto ABS and other substrates by introducing a number of new grades to the Asia market. Overmolding solutions for GLS can be translucent or clear – enabling the substrate to be seen – and can have a matte or shiny finish. GLS even offers thin-wall overmolding capability. As with the other GLS technologies, customers can select from a range of hardnesses and various chemistries to meet specific application needs. Applications for these new TPE technologies – which will be manufactured at GLS’ Suzhou facility – include powertools, office supplies, kitchen appliances, personal care, and consumer electronics.
Customers interested in these technologies can easily contact any of GLS’ technical sales engineers conveniently located in GLS offices based in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and the Suzhou facility to identify the best TPE or develop a custom solution.
