Momentive presents optimised fully-fluorinated LSR family
LEVERKUSEN, GERMANY — OCTOBER 14, YEAR
Momentive Performance Materials today presents its new, further-improved FFSL 70x1 range of fully-fluorinated liquid silicone rubber products. These new fluoro silicones succeed in combining excellent suitability for non-polar media such as fuels, lubricants and oils with cost-efficient fully automated manufacturing using conventional LSR process and cold runner technology for flash-less and trim-free parts within very short cycle times. The resistance to the different media and physical material characteristics are similar to those of conventional fluorovinylmethyl silicone (FVMQ). However, the poly addition system developed for this material guarantees much faster polymerisation than conventional, peroxide cross-linked FVMQ materials. The low viscosity attained also ensures the compatibility to basic principles of the mass-production applications of LSRs.
Momentive first presented this range of materials to the global market in 2007. The feedback and experience gained in the field was applied, with the cooperation of customers, in the second generation of FFSLs, with even faster vulcanisation and further improvements in terms of manufacturing performance.
“Our plant is dedicated above all to the production of LSR, mainly for use in the connector and cable seals used throughout the complex wiring harness in automotive assemblies. Where seals need to be resistant to fuel products, we previously had to rely on external supply of fluorosilicone parts,” explains Stefan Roenisch, Manager Tool & Process Engineering LSR at Delphi Connections-Systems. “The new FFSL 7051 from Momentive now allows us to undertake new projects involving items that come into contact with flex-fuels such as E85 or E22 and also with normal fuel products. The optimised version of Momentive’s new FFSLs has really convinced us in terms of its usability. We are classifying this material internally in terms of processing characteristics next to Momentive’s other well-established LSRs. After a successful validation process, we are now in mass production of new applications based on this material.”
“The straightforward LSR processing of FFSLs is at the same time beauty and beast for our many new projects,” says Oliver Franssen, Global Marketing Manager for Automotive Elastomers at Momentive. “Contamination with conventional residual LSR on machines/pumps that have not been cleaned correctly of just 5% in tests can have a significant effect on reactivity.
This is why we have worked closely with our application experts on those projects with our customers and our findings resulted in a new, improved generation of these materials. We have also made the conscious decision to continue marketing of the improved products under a different nomenclature.
FFSL is available commercially in hardness ratings of 30 to 70 Shore A, and there is also a self-lubricating version with 40 Shore A available.
Momentive will be presenting its FFSL range from October 14th to 18th 2008 at the Fakuma 2008 event in Friedrichshafen, Germany (http://www.fakuma-messe.de/en/fakuma, hall B2, stand 2107), together with other new developments in the area of silicone-based elastomers, RTVs and hardcoats.
